We Tried the Salmon Sperm Facial – What We Know So Far About This Viral Skincare Treatment

May 12, 2025

The salmon sperm facial in Calgary raised eyebrows when the hype first began earlier this year. Like most innovative beauty secrets we know today, the salmon sperm facial originated in Korea (known as the “glass facial” in Korean beauty), and has gained popularity in Western culture thanks to A-list celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Aniston openly sharing their use of salmon DNA for anti-aging benefits.

As the salmon sperm facial in Calgary continues to attract attention and circulate on Instagram and TikTok, we just had to investigate and try it for ourselves to give you the full scoop! Here’s what we know so far about this peculiar beauty trend and microneedling with VAMP.

What is a Salmon Sperm Facial?

Firstly, we must debunk the obvious assumption that salmon sperm itself is being applied to your skin. PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide) is a compound derived from salmon sperm and is what’s used topically on the skin for healing, anti-aging, and rejuvenation purposes.

So, why salmon DNA? Research shows that PDRN derived from salmon sperm is highly compatible with human skin. Salmon can regenerate their own tissue, and those same regeneration abilities transfer to human skin making this compound a promising addition to minimally invasive treatments.

PDRN Benefits for the Skin

  • PDRN activates fibroblasts in the skin to stimulate collagen

  • Nucleotides boost skin hydration

  • PDRN shown to potentially accelerate healing from minimally invasive treatments like microneedling and laser peels

  • Anti-inflammatory properties shown to reduce inflammation on the skin

  • May help to improve the appearance of acne scars

  • May help to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

  • May help to improve skin texture and tone

  • May help to brighten dark spots and hyperpigmentation

PDRN Benefits for Microneedling the Skin

PDRN derived from salmon sperm is commonly microneedled into the skin to improve rejuvenation results and speed healing time. Microneedling creates controlled micro-injury to the skin using tiny needles, triggering the body’s natural healing response. The result is an improvement in skin texture, tone, pore appearance, and overall rejuvenation. The regenerative properties of salmon DNA in combination with microneedling are thought to speed up the healing process, improve tissue regeneration, and enhance the skin’s appearance, including addressing texture, tone, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines and wrinkles to ultimately give the skin a renewed glow.

VAMP Microneedling Facial

VAMP is a serum blend of Vitamins, Amino Acids, Minerals, and PDRN. This powerful blend is being used as a topical after minimally invasive treatments like microneedling, or as an injectable for anti-aging, hydrating, and revitalizing benefits.

We had to test this product out for ourselves! Natasha, Founder of Natology and practicing Medical Aesthetician, microneedled her own skin with VAMP. Here’s what she has to say:

When microneedled into the skin, it feels very similar to any other microneedling treatment - minimal discomfort thanks to a topical numbing cream. To me, it felt more like a microdermabrasion session; mostly just the sensation of the handpiece moving across the skin.

Here’s what the healing process was like for me:

  • Day 1: My skin was very red with noticeable erythema and some throbbing, but nothing too painful.

  • Day 2: The discomfort and throbbing were completely gone. My skin looked slightly sunburned but already had a noticeable glow.

  • Day 3: I experienced some dryness, tightness, and light peeling - exactly what’s expected as the skin regenerates.

  • Day 5: Back to normal! Since then, I’ve seen continued improvement - brighter skin, reduced texture, fewer breakouts, and less oil production. I’m honestly so excited to do it again!

Q: Is Salmon DNA good for microneedling?

Absolutely. If you're investing in a high-quality regenerative product like PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide), the best way to see real results is to needle it into the deeper layers of the skin where it can actually create cellular-level change, not just apply it topically.

That said, quality matters. Make sure the Salmon DNA you're using comes from a reputable, medical-grade source. Using a subpar or unregulated version can put your skin at risk for reactions or infection.

Q: How many microneedling sessions with Salmon DNA do you need?

Like most microneedling protocols, we typically recommend starting with a series of three sessions to get your skin off to a strong start. After that, maintenance every six months is ideal to keep the results going.

Q: Are you considering bringing this into the clinic?

Yes - we’re seriously considering it! At Natology, we take a thoughtful, evidence-based approach to new treatments. We’re currently testing and researching the benefits of Salmon DNA microneedling, and if we continue seeing the positive results we’re seeing now, we’re hopeful it’ll be available for you soon!

Thoughts on the Salmon Sperm Facial So Far

So far, the experience with Salmon DNA microneedling has been incredibly positive. The treatment itself was surprisingly comfortable, thanks to a topical anesthetic, it felt more like a microdermabrasion session than anything invasive.

The immediate post-treatment phase involved expected redness and a bit of facial throbbing, but by the next day, the skin had already begun to calm and reveal a healthy glow. By day three, there was some mild dryness and peeling (normal signs of skin renewal) and by day five, the skin had fully recovered.

What stood out most is the noticeable improvement in overall skin quality. The complexion looks brighter, texture is smoother, breakouts have decreased, and oil production has balanced out. For someone who typically heals slowly, the quick recovery and ongoing glow have been impressive. This treatment has made a strong first impression, and there’s definitely excitement to continue with more sessions.

So far, the only “downside” that we can see for using PDRN for skin rejuvenation is a potential ethical concern for individuals who live a plant-focused lifestyle, or those who are conscious about the use of animal by-products in their skincare.

While the science behind using salmon DNA for skin rejuvenation is exciting, and this K-Beauty trend is quickly making its way in Calgary med spas, the use of PDRN remains a fairly new approach in Western beauty practices. We are eager to discover more research on the long-term benefits as it continues to emerge.
